I originally painted Motherhood with the intent of creating fortune telling cards. At the start of my spiritual journey, I discovered Tarot and was inspired to try creating my own deck. With animals as the focus, this was the perfect opportunity to expand my subject matter while exploring my spirituality as well. Divine Beasts is a series with a variety of animals that represent different aspects of the human experience. While caterpillars and butterflies could represent growth, this piece has its own meaning.
Inspired by my mother and her love of elephants, Motherhood is an ode to the unconditional love we all strive for. Elephants are symbols of wisdom, memory, and unbreakable bonds. They are known for their deep emotional connections and the way they care for one another across generations. The mother elephant, in particular, is a symbol of unconditional love and gentle strength.
In Motherhood, a mother and baby elephant press their foreheads together in a moment of deep connection. It is not a display of protection or guidance, but a quiet exchange of love. This gesture speaks to the invisible thread between mother and child; A bond that needs no words.
