I originally painted Reflection with the intent of creating fortune telling cards. At the start of my spiritual journey, I discovered Tarot and was inspired to try creating my own deck. With animals as the focus, this was the perfect opportunity to expand my subject matter while exploring my spirituality as well. Divine Beasts is a series with a variety of animals that represent different aspects of the human experience. While caterpillars and butterflies could represent growth, this piece has its own meaning.
Zebras are known for their individuality. No two patterns the same. In this piece, this zebra breaks from the herd, caught in a moment of introspection. Glancing back, not out of fear, but out of awareness, this piece captures the tension between moving forward and honoring where you’ve been. It’s about knowing when to pause, when to pull away, and when to protect your peace. Reflection is not about running. It’s about choosing solitude. Choosing stillness. Choosing yourself.
